The first thing that comes to mind about the Algarve is its all-year-round pleasant weather, dramatic coastal cliffs, and golden beaches.
But there’s plenty to do if you’re more of a sporty, active type. You can walk and hike along the rocky coasts and explore the Algarve on foot.

1. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

However, the star of the show is the view of the famous Benagil Cave from above, though it can be only accessed by boat or kayak.
The trail also passes by natural rock arches and jagged limestone formations, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Atlantic.
2. Lagos Coast Walk to Ponta da Piedade

The Lagos Coast Walk, from Lagos to Ponta da Piedade, is considered one of the best coastal walks in the Algarve.
Along the way, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the golden cliffs, hidden bays, and turquoise waters.
That’s not all, you can also explore grottoes and sea caves, particularly at Ponta da Piedade, where the limestone cliffs create dramatic natural towers.
The walk can be as leisurely or challenging as you prefer, and it’s ideal for watching sunsets from the cliffs.
3. Carvoeiro Beach to Praia do Vale de Lapa

The hiking path is marked and very easy to follow, with the ocean to your left side throughout the hike. The trail has some rocky sections so don’t forget to wear your sturdy hiking shoes.

4. Praia do Amado to Praia da Bordeira

This trail takes you through the raw, untamed beauty of the west coast from Praia do Amado to Praia da Bordeira.
Known for its excellent surf spots, this hike passes through sweeping views, stunning sand beaches, and dramatic cliff lines.
However, despite its beauty, this route is not well-known so you’ll find very few tourists here. The kind of place that only natives would know about.
We’d say it’s a peaceful escape and a unique experience along one of Portugal’s most scenic coastal trails, especially for those who prefer to hike with fewer eyes around.
5. Rota Vicentina (Sagres to Cabo de São Vicente)

The Rota Vicentina hiking trail from Sagres to Cabo de São Vicente is considered the southwestern most point of mainland Europe.
And once you reach this point, you might feel like you’ve reached the “end of the world” with breathtaking ocean views in front of you.
The route is part of the Fishermen’s Trail with rugged terrain and exposed cliffs, but it’s mostly flat with gentle inclines. And on your either side, you can expect panoramic views of the coastline.
That’s not it. During your hike, you’ll enjoy panoramic coastline views, vibrant wildflowers, and the popular lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente, a great spot for sunsets and birdwatching.
