The best beaches in Carvoeiro you can’t miss

Carvoeiro is your quintessential coastal escape in the Algarve. You can walk the stunning Carvoeiro Boardwalk, explore Algar Seco, take boat tours to caves like Benagil, or soak the sun at some of the finest beaches in the world.

In fact, Carvoeiro is a beach heaven, with limestone cliffs that run along the coastline of Algarve as far as the eye can see. If you’re a swimmer, you can let off the steam from the hot weather. But if you’re not, you can still have plenty of fun just sunbathing or kayaking.

In this guide, we will talk about the locals’ most favorite beach in Carvoeiro. If it’s your first time visiting, you’ll know exactly where to go to make the most of your Algarve holiday.

Tip: FYI, we highly recommend staying in Carvoeiro, as it’s the center of the Algarve. It’s very easy to get to plan day trips from here and all amenities are just a few steps away.

1. Praia do Carvoeiro

Praia do Carvoeiro is a small, picturesque sandy bay nestled between two limestone cliffs. With its craggy cliffs, gentle waters, and ideal location, it’s no surprise this beach is popular among visitors.

The square of Carvoeiro, Largo da Praia de Carvoeiro, is just steps away, which makes it a great option for families and kids.

It’s lined with plenty of amenities, restaurants, bars, and shops. During the warmer months, you can rent sunbeds for a comfortable day by the sea, and there’s even a little wooden hut on the beach selling essentials. For a quick refreshment, you can grab ice cream from one of the nearby shops.

We’d say Praia do Carvoeiro is the perfect place to start your Algarve vacation!

 Did you know?
Did you know that the Penthouse Atlântico overlooks Praia do Carvoeiro? The views from this apartment are breathtaking. With its central location in the Algarve, it serves as an ideal base for exploring the region. Want to book? Do it here.

2. Praia do Vale de Centeanes

Tucked between Carvoeiro and the Algar de Benagil cave is Praia do Vale de Centeanes, a long but narrow beach with golden sand that feels soft underfoot and dramatic cliffs that provide shelter from the wind.

The beach is easily accessible, so anyone looking for a relaxed day by the sea can come here.

The water here is sparkling clean, so if you’re a swimmer, this beach would make for the perfect dip. It’s backed by beautifully eroded cliffs that form unique cave-like structures, which in itself is a breathtaking sight.

One of the highlights is the Seven Hanging Valleys trail that starts from this beach and leads you to the iconic Praia da Marinha, one of the best hiking routes in the Algarve, with unforgettable views.

At the top of the cliffs, you’ll find a little spot with two chairs and a small table, where you can stop to soak in the views or snap a memorable photo. And when you feel hungry, stop at O Stop Restaurante for delicious meals.

3. Praia do Paraíso

Paradise Beach, or as we call it Praia do Paraíso, is a hidden beach, just a short walk from the town center. While it might not have much sand at high tide, and sometimes disappears altogether, it makes up for the stunning views of the cove.

You can see the waves crash dramatically against the rocks from every angle, which creates a beautiful and peaceful retreat.

Another great thing about this beach is that it’s secluded and quiet compared to the usual Carvoeiro beaches like Praia do Carvoeiro. So if it feels too busy or crowded during the summer months, you can always escape here. That way, you can still have quality beach time with fewer people around.

4. Praia de Vale Covo

Praia de Vale Covo in Carvoeiro, is a small hidden beach that has a stunning cave, crystal-clear waters, and a dramatic setting. You can access the beach via a steep staircase, which adds to its exclusivity.

One of the best things about Praia de Vale Covo is the large cave that opens directly onto the beach. At low tide, you can marvel at the rock formations and the play of light within the cave.

Due to its secluded nature, there are no facilities or lifeguards on duty. So, we do not recommend swimming or snorkeling here, as it can be quite risky.

The beach can become crowded during the summer season, so try to visit early in the day to make the most of this beach.

6. Praia da Cova Redonda

Praia da Cova Redonda is a charming, secluded beach tucked away at the foot of a dramatic cliff, complete with cool rock formations in the water. Getting down involves a bit of a journey – a long staircase with 100 steps

Once you’re down on the beach, the cliffs shelter you from the wind, and the water is usually calm and shallow around a big rock in the middle. This beach is also great for swimming in the clear blue water. Lifeguards are even on duty during peak season to keep everyone safe.

There’s a small kiosk near the entrance, called Eco Beach bar, with some refreshing drinks and snacks.

Right in the middle of the water, there’s a striking rock formation which adds a bit of drama to the beach’s character. The waters are also super clean, which makes them perfect for swimming. But keep in mind that it can get deep pretty quickly, so stay cautious.

At the top of the beach, you’ll find a little fruit shop where you can sip on fresh, healthy smoothies

For those looking for adventure, we highly recommend booking a tour with Brotherootzs Tours, a local group that offers kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding trips to nearby spots like the Benagil Cave.

2. Praia dos Caneiros

Praia dos Caneiros in Ferragudo is a smaller, more peaceful spot compared to some of the busier beaches in the Algarve.

The beach is backed by dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops, which create a breathtaking view to soak in. The water is calm and clear, which is ideal for swimming. The beach is also a starting point for kayaking. You can paddle through the caves and explore the hidden corners of this picturesque coastline.

And when you’re tired from all the exploring, there’s an exquisite restaurant called Rei das Praias where you can enjoy a meal or a drink while you relax.

3. Praia da Marinha

About Praia da Marinha we’d say that it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, without a doubt, and perhaps even in all of Portugal.

This beach has the usual — golden sands and clean waters. But the natural arches and cliffs here are extraordinary. The unique rock formations of the cliffs resemble the letter “M,” like a grand natural cathedral.

This beach also serves as a starting point for the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, a must-do hike that takes you along most incredible coastal scenery in the Algarve.

To access the beach, you’ll need to walk down a long staircase, which might be a bit difficult for small kids or older visitors. But the view from the top makes it worth the struggle. Praia da Marinha is popular, especially during peak season, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a nice spot
